Happy EOFY, bookkeepers! We are all smack bang in the middle of surviving another round of July madness. This week has been the full circus: employees chasing their year‑end numbers like seagulls after hot chips, clients wanting “just one more quick thing”, month‑end and quarter‑end prep piling up like a Jenga tower, and all of us bookkeeping powerhouses have been dreaming of to do lists every night like some kind of ledger‑haunted Victorian ghost.
If you’re anything like me, you’re already exhausted. Not “I need a nap” exhausted. I mean mentally fried, physically wilted, my brain is soup and my spine is made of fatigue kind exhausted. The kind where even my noise‑cancelling headphones are begging for annual leave.
And look, I’m trying to be good. I’m keeping the alcohol intake sensible. I’m sticking to my exercise routine. But even with all that, EOFY has drained me already in a way only other bookkeepers truly understand.
So, I’m making an effort to be positive and want to look forward to something good. Let’s talk about recharging - properly, intentionally, and without guilt. Include a real wind down sometime this weekend. Here are my tips.
1. Do absolutely nothing for one whole day
No emails. No “quick checks”. No “I’ll just tidy up this one thing”. Your brain needs a full system reboot. Treat yourself like a laptop that’s been running 47 tabs for a week straight.
2. Move your body — but gently
A walk on the beach. A slow stretch. A yoga class where you spend 80% of it lying on the mat contemplating your life choices. Your nervous system will thank you.
3. Book a massage or a float session
Man, I need this. I have been working all week with a heat back on my shoulders just to keep me going. All of our shoulders have been carrying the emotional weight of every client’s EOFY panic. This weekend, let someone else carry you for an hour.
4. Eat something delicious and nourishing
Not rushed desk snacks. Not cold coffee. Not the emergency chocolate you keep in your top drawer. A proper meal that reminds your body it is, in fact, a temple - even if it’s a slightly chaotic one.
5. Reconnect with something that isn’t bookkeeping
Read a book. Watch trashy TV (the good kind, not the mean‑spirited kind). Go to a quirky bar. Listen to live music. Do something that reminds you you’re a whole human, not just a BAS‑producing machine.
6. Celebrate yourself
You’ve just completed one of the most intense weeks of the year. You’ve supported clients, employees, and businesses. You’ve kept everything running smoothly. You deserve rest, joy, and a moment to breathe.
Happy EOFY - and may your recharge be exactly what your beautiful bookkeeping brain needs. Stay sane, stay kind to yourself, and remember: July is a marathon, not a sprint.
