If you’re a bookkeeping practice owner, you already know what’s coming. That magical, chaotic, caffeine‑fuelled vortex we lovingly call July.
It’s the month where:
EOFY is our Olympics. Except instead of medals, we get emails. So many emails.
But fear not — I’ve pulled together my Top 5 Tips to Survive (and maybe even enjoy) the July madness. These are the things that keep me sane, efficient, and only mildly feral during the busiest time of the year.
1. Prepare for July… in May and June
Future You will want to kiss Past You for this one.
Get your workflow tool loaded up with everything that needs to happen the moment the clock strikes 1 July. Whether you use XBert (my personal fave — it keeps me frighteningly organised) or something else, the key is this:
Don’t start July by figuring out what July needs.
Start July by doing what July needs. Your brain will thank you. Your clients will thank you. Your nervous system will thank you.
2. Get Your Annual Engagement Letters Signed in June
This one is a game‑changer.
Send out your new engagement letters before EOFY hits. And yes — put your prices up.
You’ve taken on:
You deserve to be compensated for the professionalism, resilience, and adaptability you bring to your clients every single year. Charge for the value you deliver — not the hours you survive.
3. Set Client Expectations Early
July is not the month for “quick questions” or “can you just…” messages.
Tell your clients now:
Clear expectations = fewer panicked emails = a calmer, happier bookkeeper.
4. Switch Off the Distractions
July requires monk‑level focus.
Whether it’s:
Protect your focus like it’s the last Tim Tam in the packet.
5. Remember to Breathe (Seriously)
EOFY is a marathon, not a sprint.
Take breaks. Stretch. Hydrate. Step outside. It’s the classic “put your own oxygen mask on first” situation — because if you’re frazzled, overwhelmed, and running on fumes, the lunatics will take over the asylum.
A calm bookkeeper is a powerful bookkeeper.
A Gentle Reminder for Small Business Clients
If you’re reading this as a business owner:
Please be kind to your bookkeeper in July.
We’re juggling:
A little patience goes a long way.
🎉 Happy EOFY — and may your July be sane, smooth, and surprisingly delightful.
You’ve got this. And if not… there’s always chocolate.
